AEO: how to get your business cited in AI answers

Search is shifting from ten blue links to a single AI answer. Here is how Answer Engine Optimization gets your business named in that answer — and why it is not the same as old-school SEO.

For twenty years, SEO meant one thing: rank on page one. But more and more people never reach page one anymore. They ask ChatGPT, Google's AI overview, or Perplexity a question and get one synthesized answer. If your business is not in that answer, you are invisible — no matter what you rank for.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you become the source the AI cites.

Why AEO is different from SEO

Classic SEO optimizes a page to rank. AEO optimizes your content to be quoted and attributed. The mechanics overlap, but the target changed:

  • SEO wants a click. AEO wants a citation.
  • SEO rewards keywords. AEO rewards clear, extractable facts.
  • SEO is about your page. AEO is about your page plus everywhere the model already trusts you.

The four things that get you cited

1. Answer the question in the first sentence

Models extract the shortest complete answer. Bury it under three paragraphs of preamble and you lose. Lead with the answer, then explain.

2. Structure facts so a machine can lift them

Use real headings, short definitional sentences, and tables for comparisons. Add FAQPage and Organization structured data so the facts are machine-readable, not just human-readable.

"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do you offer same-day appointments?",
"acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes — same-day slots are usually available." }
}]
}
\\\`

3. Be consistent everywhere

Models trust businesses whose name, address, phone, and hours match across their site, Google Business Profile, and directories. One wrong phone number and you become an unreliable source.

4. Earn mentions on pages the model already reads

A citation on a trusted local publication or an industry roundup teaches the model that you exist and matter. This is the AEO version of link building.

What this looks like in practice

A dental practice we work with went from "not mentioned" to being the named answer for "emergency dentist near me" in their city's AI overviews — mostly by rewriting their service pages to answer questions directly and fixing three inconsistent address listings.

The honest caveat

Nobody can guarantee an AI citation — the models are opaque and change weekly. Anyone promising a fixed AEO ranking is selling you certainty that does not exist. What we can do is make your business the clearest, most consistent, most-quotable answer available. That is the work.

Every CORE site includes structured data and an AEO-ready content pass as standard. It is not an upsell — it is table stakes now.
